The band dined at the Girasol Bakery on 5th Ave. in Brooklyn during the recording of the album.
SCENARIO 1
They are better than they were the last time you heard them; the intervening years have given them more experience, better musicianship, an added appreciation for the pleasure of each other's company, and a realization of how fortunate they are to still be in a position to make music. In fact, they are grateful that the identity of this band, in whatever way it is unique and identifiable, is still available to them. For what it's worth, they are also much better-looking now as middle-aged men than they were as lumpy, misshapen youth.
This is:
A) Unrelievedly good news. It feels like a victory that they are able to make this record, and that you are here to enjoy it. Perhaps it also helps that you are one of an elite few who appreciate them.
B) Putatively good news. It's always uncomfortable to reflect on the passage of time, and their success gives you something to compare yourself to, possibly negatively. However, it's good to have a good new record to listen to.
C) Bad news. Who wants to think about all the things that have happened in your life since the last time they deigned to release something? You're a different person now. Screw those guys.
SCENARIO 2
They are terrible. The intervening years have not been kind to them; their skills have atrophied, their lyrical obsessions have not aged well, they appear to be taking it for granted, and in a way bear little resemblance to the band you used to like. For what it's worth, they are also much worse-looking now as lumpy, misshapen middle-aged men than they were as young men.
This is:
A) Unrelievedly good news. The band has failed where you have succeeded; you can mock them mercilessly, and you also have aged very well if you say so yourself.
B) Putatively good news. It's a shame they couldn't get it together even for the brief period needed to make a record, but it still allows you to reflect on your relative good fortune.
C) Bad news. You've waited for 13 years for a new record, and now you may have to wait forever; what are the chances they'll even give it another try after this stinker?
THOUGHT EXPERIMENT 2
Which scenario do you secretly hope for?
Return of the Wild Style Fashionists is Teen-Beat Records Number 559. In the Supreme Mathematics, the number 5 corresponds to "power/refinement", while the number 9 means "born"; which is to say TLA took so long to make this record that it got a double dose of power and refinement along the way.
