Full album title (from spine): "An Imperial Full-Frequency Range Recording."

"Cherry Cream On" is a re-mix of the title track from the single "Cherry Cherry", which was released in England in the Spring 1991 on Hemiola/Teen-Beat.

The last track on side two, "Electrico", did not appear on the original compact disc and cassette. It was only on the vinyl edition of the album.

The song lyrics for a portion of the songs are printed inside the booklet. Lyrics for "Hydrofoil" are included, though the track does not appear on the album. The song was recorded during the same session. The lyrics for "Wednesday & Proud", the b-side to the "Cherry Cherry" single, are also included.

Longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates for the participating parties are provided in the credits.

The beats-per-minute are listed for each track on the package.

The Europe edition of the album was the first release on the then new 4AD imprint Guernica.

The band had hoped for a fall 1991 release, but No.6 Records and distributor Caroline held the release up until March of 1992. The band toured in January of 1992 with Eggs to support the album.

A few design and manufacturing flaws plagued the initial compact disc editions. Teen-Beat Graphica had designed the package to include a 12-page booklet. No.6 Records redesigned the booklet, shortening it to eight pages without consulting Teen-Beat or the band. The tray of the jewel case was intended to be opaque white, but ended up being standard black. The barcode was intended to be in a aesthetically placed box on the back cover. This space was left blank and the barcode was placed on the upper-right-hand corner. Lastly, the image of the Sears Silvertone guitar amplifier was to be a blue and black duotone, but ended up being a black photo with a cyan block on top of it. The Deluxe Edition CD corrects all of these design issues. Tracks 1, 5, 6, and 9 were created soley by Mark Robinson mostly on July 15, 1991. Track 12 was created soley by Phil Krauth. Tracks 2, 3, 6, and 8 were created by Mark Robinson and Phil Krauth. Tracks 4, 10, and 11 were created by Bridget Cross, Phil Krauth, and Mark Robinson on July 20, 1991.

"Isabel" was written by Mark in the studio during a break. The working title was "Bookshelves". It was the first song recorded for the album.

Mark played bass guitar on Suki, Champion Nines, Sugarshack, and Cherry Cream On.

The working title on the track sheet for "Firecracker" was "Precision".

The working title for "Champion Nines" was "Meditation".

Bridget and Mark attended the Morrissey / Phranc / Melissa Ferrick concert at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York on July 13th, 1991, two days before recording began on the album.

Mistakes in the lyrics to "Suki" were printed incorrectly on the 2000s CD and 2008 and 2015 LP editions. The word "beads" was mispelled as "beeds" on the original editions and "bleeds" on the early 2000s editions. These and other differences in the lyrics were corrected on the lyric sheet insert on the 2023 LP edition to closer reflect the correct lyrics and the original typesetting by Torry Colichio.

"One of the cooler things about the Great Halcyon Days of College Radio (say, 1987-93) was the number of different camps populating the underground. You had your hardcore kids, punks, and skate rats big on yelling and beer, skeptical of synths and Englishmen. You had your goths and art school kids, big on keyboards and eyeliner. And you had your tweedy collegiate types, the ones with their hands on the radio transmitters, and who made (sm)arty-pants indie-rock their reigning sound. It was that audience that took Unrest up as a flagship, making them loom as large as Pavement, Hal Hartley, and David Foster Wallace in the mid-90s college-sophomore canon. Super-minimalist pop, cloudy atmosphere, trans-Atlantic cool, and obscure obsessions like Cath Carroll and Isabel Bishop: Nothing seemed to fit quite as well with design courses and corduroy.

Design types, after all, have that thing about minimalism, and this band's stark, elegant sound could strip things down to a strikingly small number of moving parts -- some kind of warm, detailed dream of the indie-rock group as postmodern 50s pop combo. This reissue of 1992's Imperial f.f.r.r. demonstrates where Unrest, formerly a scattershot pseudo-punk outfit, became that version of itself-- an art-pop guitar band drawing incredibly simple lines. If the story of this group is that of frontman Mark Robinson gradually admitting he might rather be an English kid from the early 80s, well, their EP of Factory Records covers may be the coming-out party, but this is where it counts.

The first attraction is the sound of their big ecstatic pop songs, which feel as crisp and joyous as ever: "Suki" rushes along on clean guitar jangle and Robinson's coy babble (no one's ever sounded so good just repeating the word "kicking"), and "Cherry Cream On", an even coyer come-on, is still the record's standout blast. Come to this reissue looking for that pop rush, though, and you'll barely get an EP's worth of what you want-- even counting the eight bonus tracks. Because no matter how easy it is to remember Unrest as a racing pop act ("Cath Carroll", "Make Out Club"), the fact is that they were starker and artier than that, and the scattershot experiments of their early releases can still be heard fading into this one. The first track is just the test tone used for mastering, and around its edges you get just as many art pieces: Here a collage of beats, bells, and bass; there a pattern of feedback bouncing between speakers

But those are the poles: The actual core of this album is stark, warm, and elegantly simple, and it's in that space that Unrest wound up doing their most interesting work. The title track, for instance, is just a slow, chiming guitar run and one of Robinson's awkward choir-boy vocals; a 14-minute variant among the bonus tracks strips it down even further. The album version of "Isabel" is similar, just acoustic guitar and a careful chorus harmony; it was the 12" version, included here, that fleshed it out into a college radio hit, sounding something like indie-pop trip-hop. "June", one of the band's best-ever tracks, glides smoothly along on just bass, drums, and bassist Bridget Cross's vocals, then fleshes it out into a harmonized wash that's a blueprint for the post-Unrest Air Miami project

There are plenty of skips around that sound-- they're something like Crispy Ambulance fans on "Loyola", something like Krautrock devotees on the bonus "Hydrofoil One". But on a track like "I Do Believe You Are Blushing", it sounds absolutely pure: They seem to have whittled down American indie-rock into some variant that feels as lush and dreamy as English post-rock, and you start to see how a guitar-based three-piece from DC could share fans with acts like Stereolab, share UK label-space with the Cocteau Twins, and cover both new wave obscurities like the Family Fodder and indie pop prototypes like Miaow

The trick is to see Unrest for what they were: A pop band that didn't often play pop songs. There's always that rushing, radio-friendly jangle, yes. But the bulk of their work-- both here and on the even more accessible Perfect Teeth -- was a lot more stylized than that, and the oddly dreamy pop sound they sketched out tends to be unique enough to inspire devotion. Imperial's littered with tracks you'll wind up skipping; even with those eight bonuses (more prototypes and variants than anything else), I can only whittle it down to a nine-song Perfect Album. But when it's worth it, it kills: This stuff is pure style, and unlike just about anything around it."

"This, perhaps more than any other album, made a generation realize just how sexy geeks could be, especially when winsome. No more hiding behind a facade of hauteur, that's for poseurs. The new cool was vulnerable and endearing, and obsessively analytic enough to realize its own absurdity. Knowing, but not descending to irony, even if this release tips it closer, with nearly 27 minutes of "Imperial" spread over four versions. It's not winking at the listener, though. As the title track of the first album by the trio's essential lineup, the song bears up under scrutiny. It perfectly captures both their lo-tech experimentalism and their pop songcraft.

Thankfully, the original album art is retained, with a few modifications. The first deluxe (UK) edition bypassed the analog amplifier for a slicker graphic layout that emphasized Unrest's artier side over their simplicity. It also added three of the nine bonus tracks that appear this time around. What it lacked, though, was clarity of sound. It would have been hard to imagine that early in the CD-era that a band known to most through only one 7" single would leave a master crisp enough to result in this issue.

The original album's material sounds fantastic. The impatient, barely contained doggie-panting rhythms of "Suki" and "Cherry Cream On" snap crisply�each cymbal tick is now distinct. Guitars on the more delicate songs such as "Imperial" and "Isabel" sound much more lambent. The slow-funk bass of "Champion Nines" and speedy surf bass of "Sugarshack" are thick and chunky. Vocals are rich and affecting, particularly on "I Do Believe You Are Blushing." It's got the sexual drive of the more spastic tracks combined with an assurance that seems to be self-fulfilling, as it winds into a gentle guitar coda that could be either gently awed mutual undressing or post-coital drift. And those drones and tinkles sprinkled all over the album become almost unbearably entrancing.

The "addendum" is spottier, but still revealing. After two brief studies for songs which appear later in the band's career, we hear "Full Frequency," a 13 minute version of "Imperial." It begins with a lengthy dub-a-pella, with pianissimo instrumental lines appearing in the pauses between verses, followed by seven minutes of interlaced guitar leads, which then fade to a faint echo accompanied by a set of wineglasses. It's a potentially appalling idea, but is utterly, eerily gorgeous if listened to with attention.

The second iteration of "Isabel," sometimes referred to as the "dance" version is one of Unrest's career highlights. The fragile, wobbly vocal is replaced with a more forceful performance, bolstered by a multi-tracked production which adds richness without even trying to make Mark's voice flawless. The wispy guitar line is taken by the bass; Bridget adds many slurred notes into each run, transforming it from rickety to propulsive. Phil's percussion part is almost baggy Mancunian. It's all anchored by a rich piano line and given flight by trebly guitar filigrees. Its B-side, the luminous, lugubrious "Wednesday and Proud" is preceded by "Cherry Cherry," a slightly less echoey mix for radio.

The final three tracks are demos, two for "Imperial," and one for "Cherry Cream On." They sound like solo affairs, but provide a great focus on the guitar elements that got stripped a bit to make the final product. Whether you're an Unrest fanatic or new to the band, revisiting for the first time in ages or barely acquainted, this is currently the essential disc. Sonic quality trumps all here; one may not want to hear each track every time through, but that applied the first time around, too."
